VINYL PACKAGING

FOR THE RECORD

This experimental vinyl package design for “All the Love” by Harry Styles is meant to make listeners feel the love through funky type treatments and groovy colors. Referencing the 70s mantra of peace and love, I used acrylic paints to create a unique pattern for the cover and interior stickers. The album encompasses the most fun and expressive songs from his first two albums about life, love, sex, and self-acceptance. As each song is unique like the art itself, listeners can have fun and truly love and celebrate who they are.

LET’S MAKE A MESS

Once I had a plan for the cover, insert, and sticker, I moved forward with designing and collecting the materials I needed to make this vinyl come to life. I used Adobe Illustrator to design the text on the front and back cover and laser-cut each tiny letter on extremely thin cardboard to fit on a 12 in. by 12 in. canvas. I pulled colors from the Flower Power era and Harry’s album art, music videos, and outfits to create a color palette, and I bought bottles of acrylic paint as well as paint thinner. I placed the laser-cut letters onto the canvas with double-sided tape before prepping the paint. I mixed the acrylic paint with a little bit of paint thinner to get a runny consistency so it would spread easily. I then used plastic cups to layer the paint in a certain pattern.

Before I made any real messes, I moved my operation to the garage with plenty of newspapers covering the ground so my dad wouldn’t scold me. I placed my canvas upside down on top of the plastic cup full of paint, and after a few deep breaths, I flipped both the canvas and the cup over and let the paint flow. The trick is—if you don’t have enough paint or thin enough paint—to tilt and rotate your canvas to make the paint cover the area in different patterns and directions. 15 hours later, after all of the paint was dry and I knew that it wouldn’t budge, my vinyl cover was complete.
